Thoracoscopy

Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the pleural space, which surrounds the lungs. It is commonly performed to diagnose and treat lung diseases, pleural effusions (fluid buildup around the lungs), and certain types of lung cancer.

The procedure involves making small incisions in the chest wall through which a thoracoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera) is inserted. This allows the doctor to view the lungs and pleura directly. In some cases, tissue samples may be taken for biopsy, or fluid may be drained from the pleural space.

Thoracoscopy is used in both diagnostic and therapeutic settings. It can help identify the cause of unexplained pleural effusions, detect lung infections, and assist in the treatment of lung diseases. Compared to open surgery, thoracoscopy offers a quicker recovery time and less post-procedure discomfort.
