Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy is a procedure used to examine the airways and lungs. It helps diagnose lung diseases, infections, tumors, and blockages in the respiratory tract. The procedure is commonly used for patients experiencing persistent cough, difficulty breathing, lung infections, or abnormal chest X-rays.

A bronchoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera, is inserted through the nose or mouth and advanced down the throat into the lungs. This allows the doctor to inspect the airways and collect tissue samples if necessary. In some cases, a rigid bronchoscope may be used instead of a flexible one, especially for removing blockages.

Bronchoscopy is often performed to collect mucus or tissue samples for biopsy, remove foreign objects, or treat airway blockages. It is an essential tool for diagnosing lung conditions such as tuberculosis, lung cancer, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The procedure is typically done under sedation or local anesthesia.
